U.Va. Jazz Ensemble
to Perform Feb. 5 with Jerry Bergonzi
February
4, 2000 -- The McIntire Department of Music
will present the University of Virginia Jazz Ensemble on Sat., Feb.
5 at 8:15 p.m. in Old Cabell Hall. Tickets are $10 for adults/$8
for students and 8 ARTS$ for U.Va. students.
The Jazz Ensemble,
led by John D'earth will welcome guest artist, tenor saxophonist,
Jerry Bergonzi. Mr. Bergonzi is member of the new generation of
jazz tenor saxophonists who inherited the tradition from John Coltrane,
Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, and Wayne Shorter. Bergonzi, who has
performed all over the world, first came to prominence with the
Dave Brubeck quartet. He has performed with a whos who of jazz greats
including Roy Haines, Bill Evans, Mike Stern, Jerry Mulligan, Tom
Harrell, and Eddie Gomez. In recent years he has come to prominence
as a leader performing worldwide; his cds regularly topping the
critics poles. He has also come to prominence as an educator. Bergonzi,
a faculty member at the New England Conservatory of Music, has written
a four volume series, Inside Improvization which is a best seller
in jazz education. He has developed and taught clinics all over
the world including Berklee College of Music, Eastman and the Paris
Conservatory.
D'earth is particularly
excited about bringing Bergonzi to U.Va. because they have know
each other since D'earth was a teenager. He and Jerry have played
together over the years. John and Jerry performed together at the
now legendary Miles Davis re-creation, at the Montreaux Jazz Festival
of Davis's collaborations with composer/arranger Gil Evans, under
the direction of Quincy Jones.
The Jazz Ensemble
will also host special guests and Jazz Ensemble alumni Lisa Mezzacappa
on Bass and Brian Griffin on drums.
There will be
a free Masterclass by Jerry Bergonzi on Sat., Feb. 5 at 1 p.m. in
Old Cabell Hall 107.
