Jospe and Kevin Davis to Perform in a World Beat Workshop on Oct.

4, 2000 -- The Colloquium Series of the Mcintire
Department of Music will present Robert Jospe and Kevin Davis in
a World Beat Workshop in OCH 107 on Friday, Oct. 6, from 3:30 to
5 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
During
the workshop through lecture, demonsration, and group participation,
the African cultural influences in North, Central and South American
dance music are explored using African log drums and a wide variety
of Latin percussion instruments.
Robert
Jospe, member of the U.Va. jazz faculty, is a percussionist and
composer known for his mastery of rhythmic styles. Salsa, calypso,
samba, swing, funk and African rhythms are all incorporated into
his own unique and distinctive contemporary jazz style. He has played
with such artists as Pat Metheny, Michael Brecker, Dave Liebman,
John Abercrombie, John D'earth, Joe Henderson, Dave Matthews, Tim
Reynolds, Carter Beauford, Tal Farlow, Emily Remler, John McCutcheon,
Robin and Linda Williams, and Peter Kater. As a sideman he has performed
on numerous albums and soundtracks for PBS and the Discovery Channel.
He is a member of the U.Va. faculty jazz ensemble, The Freebridge
Quintet. Since 1992 he has had continuous funding from the Virginia
Commission for the Arts to tour with his world beat ensemble Inner
Rhythm, and his lecture/demonstration The World Beat Workshop. His
