Khan to Perform at U.Va. April 16
April
13, 2000 -- The
Center for South Asian Studies in conjunction with the McIntire
Department of Music is proud to present Shafaatullah Khan: World
Renowned Sitar and Tabla Master, on
April 16 at 7:30 p.m. in the Newcomb Hall Ballroom.
"Shafaatullah
Khan, son of Usted Imrat Khan, made history by succeeding as the
first Indian artist to achieve the unique musical repertoire by
performing sitar, tabla, and the surbahar in a single concert. He
comes from the most respected and renowned family of sitar players
in India whose lineage traces back to the 16th century to the golden
age of the Moghul emperor Akbar."
"Debuting
in the King's Lynn Festival opened by the Queen Mother of Great
Britain, he has since been acclaimed for countless performances
around the world. Shafaatullah Khan began his career at an early
age on sitar and surbahar under the tutelage of his father Ustad
Imrat Khan who along with his brother Usted Vilayat Khan comprises
the tow legendary maestros of the Indian sub-continent." "The real
driving power entered the performance when Shafaatullah's marvelous
fingers on Tabla showed us the rhythmic complexity of the music
and the enthralled the audience."
