Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection Features Exhibit of Coastal Landscape
Art
Aug.
4, 2000 -- Chronicles of the Sea: Aboriginal Coastal
Landscapes in Art, an exhibition of bark paintings, sculpture and
artifacts from Arnhem Land, in Northern Australia, is on view through
Aug. 26 at the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection.
The
exhibition is divided into four themes for which the sea and its
bounty are the inspiration. One concerns the Djang¹kawu (pronounced
jang-cow) ancestors who traveled across the sea and populated Arnhem
Land. Another topic involves images and artifacts of the Macassans,
a group of Indonesian traders who had continuous contact with coastal
people. Paintings depicting shark creation stories comprise a third
theme. The final category portrays the wide variety of animal life
inhabiting coastal waters and the stories associated with them.
A short
film, "My Country - Djarrakpi" will be screened in the Study Center
to show a sample of the physical landscape associated with these
paintings and objects.
Guided
