Assistant Dean Of Students Honored For Commitment To Helping Non-English
Speakers
October
20, 2000 -- University of Virginia assistant dean
of students Pablo Davis recently received the first annual Assistance
to Non-English Speakers Award, given by the Blue Ridge English as
a Second Language Council (BRESL).
The
award recognizes a man or woman who "promotes feelings of community,
shared values, and mutual respect through efforts to help non-English
speakers in Central Virginia," according to BRESL president
Frances Lee-Vandell.
Among
Daviss accomplishments is the founding of the Latino Roundtable,
an organizational base for various community groups reaching out
to Latinos. He has also been heavily involved in a number of initiatives
such as First Glance, a tutoring program for middle and high school
Latino children.
Davis
was presented with a plaque at an Oct. 14 lunch that included an
address by U.Va. professor and "Cultural Literacy" author
E.D. Hirsch.
