Expert On Ancient Mediterranean Painted Vases And Ceramics To Speak At The University Of Virginia

February 24, 2000 -- Tyler Jo Smith, visiting assistant professor of art history at U.Va.’s McIntire Department of Art and an expert on ancient Mediterranean painted vases and ceramics, will lecture on "Transvestism or Travesty: Dance, Dress and Gender in Greek Vase Painting" on Thursday, March 2, at 5:30 p.m. in Campbell Hall, Room 160. A reception will follow in Fayerweather Gallery.

Smith received her B.A. from Davidson College and her Ph.D. from Merton College, University of Oxford, where she studied with Sir John Boardman, the leading international authority on Greek vase painting. She is currently preparing an authoritative catalog of the collection of Greek vases owned by the British School in Athens, of which she is a fellow.
