Virus Alert -- "Resume - Janet Simons"
May
31, 2000 --
A new Word macro virus is circulating via email. If you receive
a message with the subject "Resume - Janet Simons" it is probably
a copy of that virus and should be deleted instead of being opened.
You should also send the sender a message telling them their machine
may be infected. If opened the attachment attempts to send copies
of itself to others using Outlook. Once closed commands left behind
attempt to delete files from your system. For details on the virus
and how it works see the Norton
web site.
If
you are already running Norton AntiVirus, open it and run Live Update
to get the latest virus definitions (dated 5/26/2000). If you are
running Dr. Solomon or Virex we recommend uninstalling those programs
and updating to Norton Antivirus. The Dr. Solomon is no longer getting
regular updates from the vendor, and the U.Va. license for Virex
expires at the end of the year. PC users can find installation instructions
for Norton AntiVirus, including instructions for uninstalling Dr.
Solomon on ITCWeb.
Macintosh
users can find instructions for upgrading to Norton AntiVirus on
ITCWeb.
This
is another in the disturbing trend of people pssing viruses via
email and attachments. If you don't expect an attachment from someone,
or don't know for sure what the attachment will do, do not open
it without confirming the legitimacy of the attachment with the
sender. No other action is safe.
