The
Youngest Member of U.Va.'s Graduating Class of 2000
May
5, 2000 -- At 17, Katherine Ann Giltinan of Faber,
in Nelson County, the daughter of David and Sally Giltinan, will
be the youngest person to graduate from the University of Virginia
this year. She will receive a B.A. in English,
after maintaining a GPA of approximately 3.8.
Giltinan,
whose father and grandfather also went to U.Va., entered the University
at age 16, already in her third year of college. She began college
at 13, attending Piedmont Virginia Community College, where she
earned an associate's degree at 15, with a 4.0 average.
She
was taught to read early and, suffering from asthma and other illnesses,
was taught at home until the eighth grade. She has always loved
reading and writing, she says. She took classes in London last summer
with U.Va. English professors and plans to work with a publishing
company in Charlottesville after graduation.
