Artist
and writer Buzz Spector has constructed a unique career out of his
fascination with everything pertaining to books, from the visual
form and material makeup of the volumes to reading and book collection.
Driven
by this strong interest, Spector has used books to build walls and
refashion abstract paintings. The founding editor of "White
Walls," a journal of artists writings, he frequently
writes exhibition reviews and essays on the "artists
book" genre. His artwork is featured in major museum collections,
including the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago and the J. Paul
Getty Museum of Los Angeles.
Spector
will give the lecture in conjunction with the Virginia Festival
of the Book as well as his exhibition, "My Fiction: Buzz Spector
and the Book," at Charlottesvilles Second Street Gallery
at 201 Second Street NW.
The
talk is sponsored by the McIntire Department of Art, with the help
of the Deans Special Lectures Committee, the Department of
English and the Second Street Gallery.
