A special
exhibition, "Masquerades," opens Saturday, Oct. 13, atthe University
of Virginia Art Museum and runs through Sunday, Dec. 23.
The
exhibition complements the 2001 Virginia Film Festival theme
Masquerades which examines characters whose identities are
performances. They include con artists and tricksters, imposters
and impersonators, race and gender benders, actors and other role
players. The museum has created a post-modern assemblage that fits
the theme, while giving visitors the opportunity to view some seldom-seen
works from its permanent collection.
Selections
include paintings by Lowell Nesbitt and G.C. Robinson, and photographs
by William Klein, David Levinthal, Cindy Sherman, Man Ray, and the
team of Patrick Nagatani and Andrée Tracey. Among the prints
and drawings in the exhibition are works by Pat Steir, Pablo Picasso,
Manon Cleary, and Francisco Goya. Also included in the exhibition
will be selected works by Lynn Hershman, a featured artist of the
14th Virginia Film Festival.
