U.Va.'S
Final Exercises To Be Broadcast Live On Grounds
May
9, 2001-- Hundreds
of visitors to the University of Virginia's Final Exercises on Sunday,
May 20, will be able to watch the ceremony in air-conditioned comfort.
Last
May, more than 25,000 people gathered on the U.Va. Lawn for graduation.
To help ease the crowding and to provide additional seating for
family members, the University will broadcast the outdoor ceremony
from four handicapped-accessible auditoriums.
Each
student receives three tickets for reserved seats on the Lawn. While
a limited number of non-ticket holders can stand in an open area
on the upper Lawn, that space increasingly has become overcrowded.
Seating
at the four locations --- where the ceremony will air on large projection
screens --- will be on a first-come, first-served basis. The locations
are:
- Newcomb
Hall Theatre and Newcomb Hall Ballroom, located near the
Central Grounds parking garage off Emmet Street. The theatre,
on the first floor, accommodates 495 guests, and the third-floor
ballroom has a seating capacity of 500.
- Chemistry
Building auditorium, located on McCormick Road, near Scott
Stadium parking lots. The fourth floor auditorium has a seating
capacity of 490.
- Ruffner
Hall auditorium, in the Curry School of Education, on Emmet
Street. The basement floor auditorium seats 132 people.
All
are located near shuttle bus stops. Doors will open at 8 a.m., and
University staff will be available to provide information.
In
case of extreme weather conditions forcing the outdoor ceremony
to indoor locations, Newcomb Hall Theatre and the Chemistry Building
auditorium will be the only sites available for viewing a broadcast.
Electronic
viewing of Finals 2001 also will be available live on the World
Wide Web. Visit http://www.virginia.edu/majorevents/webcast.html
