Murray
Foundations Establish New Mcintire Professorship
March
9, 2001-- The Tampa, Fla.-based Murray Foundations
recently gave the University of Virginias McIntire School
of Commerce an initial $700,000 gift toward a million-dollar commitment
to establish the Murray Research Professorship Fund. The Murray
Research Professorship will enable the McIntire School to recruit
and retain a senior scholar in finance or management information
systems.
"McIntires
commitment to innovation and leadership in business education requires
constant renewal of our intellectual capital," said McIntire
Dean Carl Zeithaml. "The Murray Research Professorship will
contribute substantially to the effective creation and dissemination
of new knowledge that strengthens the curriculum and the entire
student experience. We are extremely grateful for this generous
gift."
The
Murray family of Tampa supports the Murray Foundations, established
to assist a broad array of charitable causes. Contributors to the
Murray Foundations include Jack K. Murray Jr., a principal in the
Murray Corp., a family venture capital and holding company based
in Tampa; his son, Jack K. Murray III , a 1985 McIntire alumnus
and executive vice president and chief financial officer of AdvantTech
Solutions, a Tampa-based fim that designs human-resource software
systems; and another son, Michael S. Murray, a 1988 McIntire graduate
and president of Murray Corp.
Since
1981, family members have given more than $1 million to the University
of Virginia.
In
addition to his support of McIntire, Jack Murray Jr., an alumnus
of West Virginia University, has long supported the Virginia Student
Aid Foundation. Both sons continue the family tradition of generous
financial support of U.Va. and are actively involved in building
McIntires alumni and business partner network in Florida,
sponsoring alumni events and advising the dean on curriculum and
project issues.
"This
gift will strengthen McIntires growing national reputation
in the areas of management information systems and finance,"
said William Shenkir, McIntires William S. Farish Professor
of Free Enterprise. "It is crucial that faculty be provided
the necessary resources to pursue their research. The Murray Research
Professorship Fund helps us meet this important need."
