U.Va.
Cited For Environmental Excellence In Its Recycling Efforts
February
15, 2001-- The University of Virginias Division
of Recoverable and Disposable Resources was awarded the Virginia
Recycling Associations annual Environmental Excellence Award
for an institutional recycling program.
The
award was presented to Vice President for Management and Budget
Colette Sheehy on Feb. 7. Selection committee members cited U.Va.s
organized recordkeeping, informational CD-ROM given to all students
and innovative approach to recycling in the University community.
They also cited the recycling teams slogan, "
there
are better places for education dollars than filling a hole in the
ground."
U.Va.s
conservation initiatives have also received national attention.
Last October, the White House Task Force on Recycling commended
the University for its leadership role in promoting recycling in
the community. In 1999, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
named U.Va. to its Honor Society for achievements in the Energy
Star Building Partnership, a voluntary energy conservation program.
"We
make it easy to recycle," said Sonny Beale, operations manager
for the Division of Recoverable and Disposable Resources. "Staff,
students and faculty agree that its easier to recycle than
to throw recyclables into the trash because weve done our
homework and placed containers strategically."
Last
year, 110 tons of glass, aluminum and plastic containers and 1,705
tons of paper were part of the 5,700 total tons of materials recycled
at U.Va.
