Alumni leader helped establish new organization

Alan Y. Roberts Elected President Of U.Va. College Foundation

May 16, 2001-- The University of Virginia College Foundation board of trustees recently elected Alan Y. Roberts of Charlottesville as its president.

Formally announced on April 20 with an endowment of more than $77 million, the College Foundation is a Virginia non-stock corporation. It was organized over the past two years and evolved from the College Alumni Council. Alumni of the U.Va. College and Graduate School of Arts & Sciences created the foundation to attract high-level private investment in the University's core undergraduate liberal-arts programs and to work in partnership with the school's dean to advance the goals of the College.

The foundation's 30 trustees are from around the country and meet regularly to promote the interests of the College.

A 1964 College graduate, Roberts was instrumental in establishing the foundation and in receiving approval from the U.Va. Board of Visitors to do so last June.

A U.Va. volunteer for many years, Roberts is on the search committee for a new dean of Arts & Sciences, a member of the U.Va. Raven and Lawn societies, and the gift and reunions chair for the U.Va. Class of 1964.

For more than 25 years before retiring to Charlottesville, Roberts was an antiques dealer, consultant and appraiser in the New York area, with special interests in historic American manuscripts, Georgian art and antiques.
