Sayre, photographer and curator of the traveling exhibition "This
is Not a Photograph," currently on view at the University of Virginia
Art Museum, will give a public lecture on Tuesday, Sept. 11, at
5:30 p.m. in Campbell Hall, Room 153. His talk is titled "Photography's
Other History and Its Progeny."
exhibition features photographic images produced without cameras
and examines the question: "Is camera-less photography really photography?"
It includes photographic work of 15 artists who have exhibited worldwide
and extends the long tradition of experimentation with materials
since the creation of the photographic process.
a professor at Pace University in Pleasantville, N.Y., has participated
in numerous exhibitions and one-person shows at museums and galleries.
A solo exhibition of his work is scheduled for August 2002 at Carnegie
has published many articles on teaching photography and has lectured
at museums on the subject. He is the recipient of a National Endowment
for the Humanities grant and, most recently, a grant from the Mid-Atlantic
