Deborah
Tarn Steiner, associate professor of classics at Columbia University,
will launch the fall semester McIntire Lecture Series in the Department
of Art with a talk on the komast vases of ancient Greece.
Steiner,
an expert in archaic and classical Greek literature, Greek religion
and mythology, will provide insight into the depiction of the komast
dancers, who are usually shown in lively, animated dance, associated
with banquet celebrations.
Her
books include "The Tyrant's Writ: Myth and Images of Writing in
Ancient Greece" and "Images in Mind: Statues in Archaic and Classical
Greek Literature and Thought."
