"Unknown
Paths: Choice and Chance," works by 2001 University of Virginia
alumna Tara DePorte, will be on exhibit at Fayerweather Gallery
Aug. 3-26. The opening reception will be in the gallery on Friday
Aug. 3, 5-8 p.m.
DePorte
works in oil, frequently incorporating sculptural elements in her
paintings. Exploring line and color, DePorte paints her fears, angers,
questions, and happiness. The human figure is a recurring theme
in many of the large-format paintings in the show, where it often
emerges from an abstract background, reflecting the artist's questions
about womanhood, gender and fertility.
"My
subject matter is carried by emotions and thought-patterns, which
reflect the people, places and things around me," says DePorte.
"I have found myself imposing simultaneous feelings of comfort and
discomfort in my works -- reminiscent of the conflicting flux of
our own emotions in the face of change."
The
social consciousness of her subject matter often reveals her reactions
to topics such as rape and life in an orphanage in Haiti.
A U.Va.
Interdisciplinary Distinguished Major, DePorte focused on human
impacts on ecosystems with an emphasis on biology, environmental
sciences and anthropology. She minored in studio art with specialization
in painting and during a spring 2000 Paris study program, studied
painting, sculpture and photography at the SPEOS Photographic Institute
and participated in the prestigious copyist program at the Louvre
Art Museum. DePorte has exhibited in a many group shows and has
had numerous commissions.
