The
special exhibition, "Art Beyond the Classroom: Selections from
the Curriculum Support Fund," opens Saturday, April 13, at
the University of Virginia Art Museum and runs through Sunday, June
30.
Since
1985, the provosts office has allocated funds for "curriculum
support," the acquisition of works of art for the museums
collection that serve the academic needs of faculty in the McIntire
Department of Art.
This
annual fund has made possible the purchase of Roman coins, Old Master
and contemporary prints, South Asian works on paper, photographs,
paintings and sculpture. Occasionally, works by visiting artists
in the Art Department, such as Eeva-Liisa Isomaa, Italo Scanga and
Bogdan Achimescu, are acquired.
This
first major exhibition from the 17-year history of the fund underscores
its significant impact on both the development of the museums
collections and on its collaboration with the Art Department.
The
University of Virginia Art Museum is open to the public without
charge Tuesday through Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m. The museum is located
on Rugby Road, a short distance from the Rotunda. Limited parking
is available behind the museum.
