Of Virginia Art Museum Will Be Closed For The Holiday Season Dec.
23 - Jan. 11
December 10, 2002--
The University of Virginia Art Museum will close for the
holidays Dec. 23 through Jan. 11. The museum will reopen on Saturday,
Jan. 11, featuring "Honoring the Legacy of Lewis and Clark:
Native American Art and the American West." The show features
works from the permanent collection including beaded garments from
the Plains and Prairie peoples and basketry utilizing local fibers
crafted by peoples living on the plateaus. The objects on display
show that the American Indians encountered by Lewis and Clark maintained
their traditional styles and methods of production nearly 100 years
later, incorporating native and trade materials. The exhibit also
includes prints showing images of the land and people by George
Catlin and Karl Bodmer on loan from the A.G. Edwards Corporate Collection.
