"Treasures
from the Earth," an exhibition of Southwestern Native American art
opens at the University of Virginia Art Museum Saturday, March 30,
and runs through Sunday, June 9.
The
exhibition features pottery, baskets, textiles and jewelry made
by Native Americans living in the southwestern United States. The
works, all drawn from the museums permanent collection date
from 1880 to the mid-20th century. The pieces reflect
traditional Native-American values, materials, and methods that
contribute to maintaining the delicate balance between man and earth.
Mary
Jo Ayers, adjunct curator of Native American Art and exhibit organizer,
will present a gallery talk on Sunday, April 7 at 2 p.m. in the
museum.
