"Re-Collection"
features photographic mementos by Lucy OConnell, Aunspaugh
Fifth-Year student in the McIntire Department of Art at the University
of Virginia. This exhibition, ranging from snapshots to cyanotype
photograms, focuses on preserving and recreating memory and the
compulsion to collect in order to remember.
To
the artist, snapshots are the epitome of "re-collections."
They are not overworked or precious, but rather candid, simple and,
most importantly, numerous. Yet in an ordinary batch you might find
a peculiar one, something unexpected, defective and amazing. It
is on these mistakes that OConnell focuses. The photos in
the exhibit are delicate collections of impossibility, captured
and lost.
Students
from the Aunspaugh Fifth-Year program in Studio Art at the University
of Virginia will exhibit their work in Fayerweather Gallery at the
University through May 29.
Exhibits
will change weekly to feature individual artists and their diverse
interests, including installation art, printmaking, painting, sculpture
and photography. Closing receptions will be held each Friday at
5:30 p.m. in the gallery.
