American
printmaking was revolutionized in the 1960s when specialized print
workshops published and printed graphic editions of artists
work. This development conveyed the aesthetic of the painter in
an effortlessly professional work of art that was available to many
collectors.
The
exhibition, "Ten Works by Ten Painters: A Portfolio of Screenprints,"
which opens at the University of Virginia Art Museum on Saturday,
April 6 and runs through Sunday, June 23 features screenprints by
Stuart Davis, Robert Indiana, Elsworth Kelly, Roy Lichtenstein,
Robert Motherwell, George Ortman, Larry Poons, Ad Reinhardt, Frank
Stella and Andy Warhol.
The
portfolio "Ten Works by Ten Painters" was published by
the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford, Conn., setting an example that
would be followed by many other art institutions.
The
10 prints in the exhibit are part of the museums permanent
collection.
The
University of Virginia Art Museum is open to the public without
charge Tuesday through Sunday, 1 to 5 p.m.
