Historian
Edward Ayers Will Discuss New Civil War Book Oct. 28
October 1, 2003 --
University
of Virginia history professor Edward L. Ayers will read from and
discuss his new book, “In the Presence of Mine
Enemies: War in the Heart of America, 1859-1863,” at 6 p.m.
Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the U.Va. Bookstore.
Published
by W.W. Norton, the book tells the story of 19th century white
and black residents
of Augusta County, Va., and Franklin
County, Pa., and challenges some popular views of the Civil War.
Ayers’ research draws on a U.Va. computerized archive, “The
Valley of the Shadow,” that presents every known Civil
War-era document about the two localities, farming communities
on opposite
sides of the Mason-Dixon line.
U.Va.’s
dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, Ayers
was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award
for his 1992 book “The Promise of the New South.”
