Blasting To Occur At Arena Site
June 16, 2003 --
Blasting is scheduled to begin next week at the site
of the John Paul Jones Arena on Massie Road as part of foundation
excavation for the adjacent parking garage.
Current
plans set blasting Monday through Friday, starting Monday and ending
June 27. Blasting will be restricted to two periods each day, between
11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. and between 6 and 7 p.m., with one blast
per hour. These times were selected to have the least impact on
the U.Va. Child Development Center on Copeley Road and on residents
in the area.
The
blasting itself will entail setting small charges to loosen rock
for excavation. The explosives will be placed in holes drilled in
the rock, with three feet of soil placed over them and then all
of it covered by metal and synthetic fiber mats.
“Ninety-nine
percent of the people around there won’t feel it or hear it,”
Project Director Richard B. Laurance said.
Five
minutes before each blast, the contractor will sound warning signals
with a siren, and flagmen along Copeley Road will keep pedestrians
and vehicles away from the blasting area. Immediately after the
blasting, normal access to Copeley Road will resume.
There
will be no blasting on Sunday, though there may be some blasting
on Saturdays if weather hampers weekday excavation.
Laurance said city and county officials have been notified of the
blasting, and the contractor has obtained all relevant permits.
