“Valley
Of The Shadow” Civil War Web Archive Adds Thousands Of New
Documents

The
Virginia Center for Digital History at the University of Virginia
is pleased to announce the release of a major new version
of its
award-winning Web archive, “The Valley of the Shadow: Two
Communities in the American Civil War.”
The “Valley
of the Shadow” is a digital archive of
primary sources that document the lives of 19th century people
in Augusta County, Va., and Franklin County, Pa., and is one
of the most widely visited Internet sites about the Civil War.
Viewers
may now explore thousands of new original documents to see what
life was like during the Civil War for the men and women of Augusta
and Franklin.
This
greatly expanded version of the “Valley” contains
more than 1,400 letters and diaries, 8,300 newspaper pages,
1,500 military dossiers and battle accounts, 110 GIS-based maps
and
charts, 700 Civil War images, the 1860 and 1870 censuses, and
thousands
of other records. The new “Valley” Web site also
includes enhanced navigation tools, new timelines for the Civil
War era,
and full-text searching capabilities.
