Nine
General Assembly Members To Participate In Legislative Forum On
Virginia Public Higher Education
October 1, 2003 --
On
Wednesday, Oct. 8, the Legislative Affairs Committee of Student
Council
will sponsor a legislative forum on higher education from
7 – 8:30 p.m. in Newcomb Hall Theater. The University community
will have the opportunity to question nine members of the Virginia
General Assembly on the condition and future of public higher education
in the Commonwealth.
Student
Council has organized the event in an effort to facilitate dialogue
between legislators and University
students. “I
hope that the legislators come to understand how their votes
directly impact Virginia students — our future depends
on the choices they make today,” said Alex Stolar, chair
of the Legislative Affairs Committee.
Stolar
also hopes to encourage students to take an active role
in the political process. “It is important for college
students to be involved in state politics because the future
of Virginia
is at stake. Today’s General Assembly, in many respects,
holds the key to a prosperous Commonwealth in the future,” he
said.
The
Legislative Affairs Committee of Student Council represents the
concerns of U.Va. students to local, state,
and federal
legislative bodies. The committee also participates in the
Virginia Student
Leadership Alliance, which coordinates public policy positions
among students at colleges and universities in the Commonwealth.
The
members of the General Assembly that will be in attendance
are:
- Sen.
Charles J. Colgan (D-29th District)
