February 3, 2003--
The University of Virginia’s Spanish Theater Group
will present its annual spring play Feb. 6-9 at Helms Theater. This
year’s production will be Federico Garcia Lorca’s acclaimed
and colorful flamenco drama, “Bodas de Sangre (Blood Wedding).”
Evening
performances will be at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and
matinees will be offered at 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets
are $5 for students and $10 for others and can be purchased at the
door or in advance at the Spanish department office, 112 Wilson
Hall.
With
a cast of Spanish-speaking students, former students and faculty,
the popular theater group performs in Spanish and offers a different
drama each year from Spain or Latin America.
Spanish
professor Fernando Opere, the troupe’s founder, directs this
year’s cast in Lorca’s poetic tragedy, “Bodas
de Sangre.” Written in 1938, it is one of the Spanish poet’s
most famous works. It is set in Lorca’s native Andalucia region
and tells the story of a young bride who elopes with her lover.
