Students
To Collect Clothing For Salvation Army
January 31, 2003--
Students from the University of Virginia will be holding
a clothing drive from noon to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 6,
at the U.Va. Bookstore. The theme of the drive is “Clothes
from Cupid,” and all clothing collected will benefit the Salvation
Army.
On
hand to promote the drive, local radio station WUVA 92.7 will be
broadcasting live from the main entrance of the Bookstore from 1
to 4 p.m. In addition to live music and entertainment, there will
be free food and drink for visitors dropping off clothing articles.
In addition, every person who donates will be entered in a lottery
to win one of many prizes.
“Many
members of the Charlottesville community are without adequate clothing,
and donations are more necessary than ever during the cold winter
months,” said Laurie Casteen, assistant director of orientation
and new programs at U.Va. “The ‘Clothes from Cupid’
drive welcomes all types of clothing, outerwear, hats, gloves and
shoes. Size and style do not matter, just the act of giving.”
Students
organizing and sponsoring the event include members of the Transfer
Student Peer Advisor Program, the Office of African-American Affairs
Peer Advisor Program and the Peer Advising Family Network. Casteen
said the clothing drive is the culmination of months of collaborative
work by these students who serve as volunteer mentors to new students
at U.Va.
The
U.Va. Bookstore is located on Emmet Street, and a free half-hour
of parking is available for donors in the parking garage directly
below the store.
