Native Voices: The Struggle For Federal Recognition Of The Virginia
Indian Tribes -- A Discussion At U.Va. April 18
April 9, 2004 --
Steve Adkins, chief of the Chickahominy Tribe of Virginia,
will lead a discussion and presentation, on Sunday, April 18 at
the
University of Virginia, on the struggle of six of Virginia's
Indian Tribes to attain federal recognition.
The
discussion is free and open to the public. It will be held at
4:30 p.m. in the Commonwealth
Room on the third floor of Newcomb
Hall. A reception will follow in the Art Gallery at 6 p.m.
Since
attaining recognition from the Commonwealth of Virginia, the
tribes have been engaged in a political and legal struggle
to attain status as federally recognized tribes from the Bureau
of Indian Affairs and the U.S. Congress. The public is invited
to come understand the importance of tribal federal recognition
to the heritage of the Commonwealth.
Hourly
parking is available in the Central Grounds parking garage on
Emmet Street.
