Brown Named Director Of U.Va.’s Hampton Roads Center

June 30, 2005 -- K. Edwin Brown, of Virginia Beach, has been named director of the University of Virginia’s Academic Center at Hampton Roads.

Brown’s duties will include managing academic and administrative functions at the center, which offers U.Va. credit and noncredit programs throughout the Hampton Roads area.  In addition, Brown will work with the business community, other educational institutions, and local and state governments to support economic development of the region. Brown starts in his new job on July 1.

Brown, whose appointment was announced June 3 by Sondra F. Stallard, dean of the School of Continuing and Professional Studies, has a distinguished record in education, with teaching experience that spans elementary grades through graduate school, including instruction at the Hampton Roads Center.  Brown has served as a principal, school division assistant superintendent and interim superintendent for Virginia Beach City Public Schools.

Experienced in strategic planning and assessment, Brown has moved new initiatives forward while building a consensus of support among diverse stakeholders.   He was named Administrator of the Year” for 1995 by Virginia Beach Association of Educational Leadership and received the Virginia Beach Education Association’s Excellence in Education Award in 1993.

With a strong commitment to the development of rigorous learning standards for all children, Brown has served as president of the Virginia Association for the Gifted and as team leader for the revision of Virginia’s Standards of Learning in English.

A native Virginian, Brown received all of his education in the commonwealth, earning a liberal arts baccalaureate and his masters’ degrees from the College of William and Mary. He received a doctoral degree in education from U.Va., and completed additional graduate work at Old Dominion University, Virginia Tech and George Washington University.

Brown enjoys historic preservation, music and world exploration. He has served as chairman of the Board of Governors of Francis Land House and as chairman of the Arts and Humanities Commission in the Virginia Beach region.  A choir in which he sings performed this spring at the Innsbruck, Austria, Choral Festival, and he recently returned from trekking the jungles of South America.
