Nancy Rivers, Jon Bowen To Join President’s Staff
July 15, 2005 --
University of Virginia President John T. Casteen III today announced the appointment of two key members of his staff.
Casteen named Nancy Rivers as his new chief of staff. She has served as assistant vice president for management and budget since 2003, has managed that office’s functions since 1996 and has directed the Office of State Governmental Relations since 1998. Rivers came to the University in 1989 as associate director of the Intramural-Recreational Sports Department, and previously held posts at Fairfield University in Fairfield, Conn. and the University of Texas at Austin. She earned a bachelor’s degree from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa in 1979, and a master’s degree from the University of Iowa in 1986.
Rivers replaces Amy Cronin, who resigned to accompany her family to Ithaca, New York. Rivers’ new responsibilities will include directing all activities that support the work of the president.
Jon Bowen will become assistant to the president, primarily responsible for drafting, editing and preparing written texts, including speeches, reports and letters. Most recently, Bowen was director of communications for James Madison’s Montpelier, but previously served for 18 months as communications manager for U.Va.’s College of Arts & Sciences. He has also held positions in writing, editing and marketing. Bowen earned a bachelor’s degree in English from George Mason University in 1988, and a master of fine arts in writing from U.Va. in 1991.
Bowen succeeds Margaret Klosko, who resigned to pursue a business opportunity.
