University Of Virginia To Host 22nd Annual Diversity Career Day On Nov. 1
October 26, 2005 --
Diversity Career Day, an annual recruiting event hosted by University Career Services at the University of Virginia, will take place Nov. 1 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Omni Hotel in Charlottesville. Initiated in 1983, Diversity Career Day has grown to be the largest minority-recruiting event for college students in the mid-Atlantic region. More than 1,000 students are expected to attend this year from U.Va. and from colleges and universities in Virginia and Washington, D.C.
Recruiters from more than 120 organizations have registered to participate this year. They represent a variety of public, private and nonprofit entities from business, government, health care, technology and other fields. Friedman Billings Ramsey Group Inc., Hecht’s, New York Life Insurance Company/NYLIFE Securities and Philip Morris USA are sponsoring this year’s event.
Prior to the event, University Career Services will host a reception for U.Va. students, recruiters and invited guests on Oct. 31 from 6 to 8:00 p.m. in the main ballroom of the Omni Hotel. The evening’s guest speaker will be Verelyn C. Gibbs, director of marketing services, Women’s Markets at New York Life Insurance Company. Her responsibilities include the support and training of New York Life agents and managers across the country, as well as an active role in the development of recruiting and marketing materials and implementation of programs to successfully target the women’s marketplace.
Gibbs earned an M.B.A. in marketing management from Pace University and a bachelor’s degree in marketing from Morgan State University. She holds an NASD Series 6 license, is part of the New York Life Women’s Leadership Project and has authored articles for industry publications, most recently The National Underwriter magazine.
Formerly known as Minority Career Day and originally designed for African-American students, Diversity Career Day has been broadened to include all students. All schools, all majors, all students are welcome.
