Crafts, games, drawing contests, readings in French from French literature on Besançon by Catherine Hermary-Vieille, French songs by Christine Magne and songs and skits by French students of local schools, as well as docent tours in English and French will highlight the April 10 Family Day at the U.Va. Art Museum. The afternoon activities for adults and children are in celebration of the exhibit, "Masterpieces of European Drawing," which features works from the Musée des Beaux-Arts et d’Archéologie, Besançon, France.
This past fall, officials from Besançon and Charlottesville signed an official proclamation of friendship — the first formal step toward becoming sister cities. Nicole Yancey, honorary consul of France in Virginia; Ambassador William N. Howell, chairman of the Alliance Française Sister City Committee; and Monsieur Jean-Louis Fousseret, mayor of Besançon, will present welcoming remarks. Andrée King, founding president of Alliance Française de Charlottesville, and Kahlil Hamady, chairman of international affairs for the Albemarle Rotary Club will present a $1,000 grant to the winner of the Alliance Française Essay Contest towards a summer trip to Besançon. The Albemarle Rotary Club is funding the grant.
Admission is free. Reserved parking is available at the School of Architecture and Culbreth Theatre lots. There will be parking available for those with limited mobility at the A-6 lot at the end of Madison Bowl, across from the museum.
The event is sponsored by the museum and the Alliance Française of Charlottesville.
