U.Va.’s Class Of 2009 To Arrive On Saturday, Aug. 20

The University of Virginia is ready to take on a new academic year, beginning on Saturday, Aug. 20, with the arrival of students of the Class of 2009. An estimated 3,400 students — 3,100 first-years and 300 transfers — will arrive in Charlottesville ready to begin their academic trek.
New students will begin arriving as early as 7:30 a.m. on Saturday to move into their residence halls. U.Va. Police officials said they expect about 10,000 to 15,000 people and 5,000 to 8,000 cars to arrive on Grounds throughout the day. U.Va. Police officers will be on duty from 6 a.m. until late afternoon to assist with traffic along Emmet Street and McCormick and Alderman Roads.
University President John T. Casteen III will address parents on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Old Cabell Hall Auditorium. On Sunday at 6 p.m., Convocation and Honor Induction will begin on the Lawn (Rain site: University Hall). President Casteen also will host a reception at his home at Carr’s Hill at 4 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 22.

SATURDAY, AUG. 20
8 a.m.-4 p.m. Students move into residence halls. Upper-class student greeters will be available in the first-year residential areas to help students move into their rooms.
9 a.m.-2 p.m. Resource Fair for parents, first-years and transfers (Aquatic & Fitness Center)
Representatives from various University offices will be present to answer questions. Cold drinks will be provided.
9 a.m.-2 p.m. Say CHEESE! Student IDs prepared and distributed (Webb Residence Hall Lounge)
2-3 p.m. Presidential address for parents (Old Cabell Hall Auditorium)
3:15-4 p.m. Welcome addresses/receptions for parents from U.Va. school deans

First-year students will be shown the student seating section in the stadium, then they will meet on Whitehead Road in front of the Aquatic & Fitness Center for a party.
