Scurry Is New Interim Chief Human Resource Officer

Nat Scurry was appointed associate vice president and interim chief human resource officer on Oct. 17. He is responsible for long-term human resources strategy, management of daily HR operations and serves as principal adviser on human resources issues to Yoke San Reynolds, vice president and chief financial officer.
“Nat has broad and deep experience in Human Resource management. When I first interviewed him, I was struck by his insights and his management acumen,” Reynolds said. “Over several meetings, we learned that we shared common aspirations for the Human Resources Office in supporting and advancing an organization’s mission. His energy and creativity are tremendous assets to U.Va., and I feel very fortunate to have him in this position,” she said.
Scurry said he will strive to “be accessible to staff, initiate listening sessions with UHR customers and clients, build collaborative relationships and engage in joint ventures.” By working with schools and departments, he aims to “strengthen relationships and build mutual trust and a shared commitment to excellence.”
He also wants to emphasize accountability, both organizational and personal. His vision is a human resources department where “innovative ideas are welcome, new opportunities are created and services are rated as second to none.”
Scurry has had a distinguished career in government service, and was conferred the rank of Meritorious Executive by Presidents Reagan, Clinton and George W. Bush. He served as assistant regional administrator at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in Kansas City, Kansas, and EPA national director of Civil Rights. He was a senior policy and budget executive at the White House Office of Management and Budget and deputy director of budget and resources for the District of Columbia. He started his federal career as a mathematician at the National Bureau of Standards.
While a visiting executive at Clark Atlanta University, Scurry served as an adviser to the president and faculty. He lectured on topics including human resources, fiscal policy, equal employment opportunities and affirmative action.
A native of Sanford, Fla., he holds a master’s in public administration and a bachelor’s in mathematics. He received the Combat Infantryman’s Badge for honorable service in Vietnam.
U.Va. will launch a search within the year to find a permanent associate vice president and chief human resource officer.
