February 24, 2006 -- Larry Wilson, general manager of the
University of Virginia’s John Paul Jones Arena, today
unveiled several of the facility’s first
scheduled events which will take place in the new 16,000
seat sports and entertainment arena
starting in August 2006.
On Monday, Aug. 14, the arena will host World Wrestling Entertainment's "Monday Night Raw," which will be telecast live on the USA Network.
Disney on Ice, celebrating 100 years of family entertainment, will have five shows in the area from Oct. 18 through Oct. 22.
The 13th annual Martha’s Market that benefits the Martha Jefferson Hospital’s breast health services and women’s health care in Central Virginia will take place Oct. 27, 28, and 29. The arena will host Diversity Career Day on Nov. 2, a performance of the Lippazaner Stallions on Nov. 24, and five performances of Ringley Brothers Circus Dec. 6 through Dec. 10.
Performances by the Harlem Globetrotters and Sesame Street Live are scheduled for the spring of 2007.
Tickets for these events will
be available for purchase in the next couple
of months and members of the community can sign up now
for special Keeping Up with the Joneses e-mail alerts by visiting the John Paul Jones Area site. Keeping
Up with the Joneses allows
subscribers to review upcoming events and notifies them
when tickets will go on sale. In
addition, the site informs guests of any pre-sale opportunities
a given show may offer prior to
going on sale to the general public.
The events are managed by SMG, an entertinament and conference venue management company that was founded in 1977 to manage its first account, the
Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans. Today, the company manages over 195 venues in

The University of Virginia’s John Paul Jones Arena
is scheduled to open in Charlottesville
in July 2006 and is home to the University’s men's and women's basketball teams host to an array of exceptional entertainment events.
