March 7, 2006 -- Poet Nikki Giovanni will give the keynote public talk at the annual HUES Black Women’s Leadership Conference on March 18 at 11:30 a.m. in the Newcomb Hall South Meeting Room.
Giovanni, a University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech, has written 12 collections of poetry, including “Quilting the Black-Eyed Pea: Poems and Not Quite Poems,” which received the American Library Association’s Black Caucus Award for Non-fiction. Among her many honors, she has received the Governor’s Award for the Arts from both Tennessee and Virginia, has been named Woman of the Year by Ebony Magazine, Mademoiselle Magazine and Ladies’ Homes Journal and won the NAACP Image Award for Literature in 1998, 2000 and 2003.
HUES Leadership Network for Women of Color was developed at the request of U.Va. women of color, with the understanding that women of color face unique issues in their professional and academic lives.
The conference, which aims to empower black women and strengthen the community of black women at U.Va., in Charlottesville and the surrounding areas, features career-focused workshops and panels from U.Va. schools of law, business, medicine, education, arts & sciences and engineering.
Organized by the U.Va. Women’s Center, the event is cosponsored by the Darden Graduate School of Business, Student Affairs office, Dean of Students and the Studies in Women and Gender program.
