March 30, 2006 — Dr. Frederick Hayden of the University
of Virginia has been named by the World Health Organization
to lead a major effort to track and control the worldwide
spread of influenza viruses with pandemic potential.
Beginning in April, Hayden will be based in Geneva with
the WHO’s Epidemic and Pandemic Alert and Response
Program, where he will direct the creation of a clinical
research network throughout Asia, the point of origin for
the recent outbreak of the avian H5N1 virus. Hayden, a
professor of pathology and internal medicine, will return
to his post at U.Va. in April 2008.
“All of us at the University are proud of his contributions
over many years to combating influenza,” said Dr.
William Petri, chairman of U.Va.’s Division
of Infectious Diseases and International Health. “We are especially
thankful for his willingness to respond to the call from
the WHO to lend his expertise on an international scale
at this time of concern over avian H5N1 virus.”
Hayden is an internationally recognized expert on the influenza
virus. In addition to his research on the spread and treatment
of the virus, he has led efforts to formulate University
and state preparedness programs for an influenza pandemic.
Hayden, 58, received his medical degree from Stanford University.
He joined the University of Virginia in 1978.
