May 10, 2006 -- The University of Virginia Division of Recoverable and Disposable Resources is conducting its seventh annual “Chuck It for Charity” recycling drive, collecting clothes, lamps, fans, small furniture, rugs and other items that students discard when exiting their dormitories.

Bruce C. “Sonny” Beale, recycling supervisor, said the student items are collected in 23 areas around Grounds, usually lounges in dorms, and then local charities, such as Goodwill Industries, Albemarle Baptist Associates and The Furniture Ministry, collect the items to distribute to people in need within the community.

Last year, 71 tons were collected, which saves the University $21 per ton in disposal costs, Beale said.

The program is limited to the approximately 6,700 students residing on Grounds, as well as fraternity and sorority residents. Collection began at the start of exams and winds up this Saturday.

Beale said items not taken by the charities will be brought to the recycling office and other charities will be notified until all the material is gone.
