July 19, 2006 -- University of Virginia Vice President for Student Affairs Patricia Lampkin today appointed Sylvia V. Terry, long-time associate dean of the Office of African-American Affairs and director of the nationally recognized Peer Advisor Program, acting dean pending completion of the University's internal review relative to the status of Milton E. "Rick" Turner.
"Our goal is to assure continuity. Dean Terry's willingness to take on these duties at this time assures that there will be no interruption in services to students," Lampkin said. All of the responsibilities of dean have been assigned to Terry until further notice. No permanent decision regarding staffing will occur until the University concludes its investigation. At that time, Lampkin said, she will consult with University President John T. Casteen III on next steps.
Turner, the University's dean of African-American Affairs since 1988, was placed on administrative leave Friday after the University received a pretrial felony diversion agreement under which Turner acknowledged that he "knowingly and willfully made a false material representation" in which he "misrepresented his knowledge of the activities of a known drug dealer." |
