August 7, 2006 — The University of Virginia School of Architecture has named Kristina Hill as associate professor and director of the Program in Landscape Architecture. The appointment, which was announced by architecture school Dean Karen Van Lengen, will begin in Spring 2007.

According to associate professor Elissa Rosenberg, chairwoman of the Landscape Architecture Program Search Committee, Hill’s hiring signals a momentous opportunity for the program’s growth. “Hill’s wide-ranging contributions to the discipline, which combine both theoretical and empirical perspectives, will provide creative leadership in the school in the area of sustainable design. She will help to bring focus, depth and a critical voice to this agenda and be instrumental in forging new relationships between the school and the larger University.”

Before coming to U.Va., Hill will complete her term as associate professor of landscape architecture at the University of Washington, where her primary research interest has been urban ecological design. Her book on the subject, “Water, Ecology and the Design of Cities: Landscape Urbanism in the Pacific Northwest,” will be published by the University of Washington Press in 2007. She co-edited “Ecology and Design: A Framework for Learning,” published by Island Press in 2001, and has authored a series of articles on scientific method, the effects of urbanization on stream health and strategies for managing the ecological infrastructure of state roadways with minimal herbicide use.

At the University of Washington, Hill developed and implemented a new doctoral education initiative on urban ecology. As one of the few scholars with advanced training in both ecology and design, Hill has brought depth and rigor to the synthesis of these two disciplines.

In addition to her academic service, Hill has engaged in public service as a consultant for numerous public design projects in Seattle; Washington, D.C; Dallas; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Brandenburg, Germany.

Hill holds a master’s degree and a doctorate in landscape architecture from Harvard University. She earned a bachelor’s degree in geology from Tufts University. She was a Fulbright Scholar in 1990 and was appointed a Fellow of the Urban Design Institute in 2003.
