94-04-01 Symposium on Former Soviet Union and East Europe to be Held at U.Va. April 8 and 9 SYMPOSIUM ON FORMER SOVIET UNION AND EASTERN EUROPE TO BE HELD AT U.VA. APRIL 8 AND 9 CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., April 1 -- Thomas W. Simons Jr., the coordinator of U.S. assistance to the newly independent states of the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, will speak Friday, April 8, at 1 p.m. at the University of Virginia. He will deliver the keynote address at the 10th annual graduate symposium on Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies in the Newcomb Hall South Meeting Room. Simons, a former ambassador to Poland, is responsible for overseeing foreign aid to the former Soviet Union for the U.S. State Department. The conference, which will continue Friday afternoon and go through Saturday, April 9, will feature papers by graduate students from U.Va. and other universities on a range of topics from literature to politics, covering the past and present of the region.
