94-04-08 Humanities and Culture Scholar Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht to Give Four Talks at U.Va. During April HUMANITIES AND CULTURE SCHOLAR HANS ULRICH GUMBRECHT TO GIVE FOUR TALKS AT U.VA. DURING APRIL CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., April 8 -- Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht, professor of literature at Stanford University and an internationally known humanities scholar, will be a Distinguished Visiting Scholar at the University of Virginia Commonwealth Center for Literary and Cultural Change this month. He will give two public lectures and two informal talks during his visit. On Tuesday, April 12, at 4 p.m. in his lecture titled "Redeeming The Victory: D'Annunzio, Mussolini and the Genealogy of Fascism," he will discuss the concept of redemption in fascist ideology and practice. On the following Tuesday, April 19, at 4 p.m. he will attempt to explain the international triumph of television in the years immediately following the end of World War II. Both lectures take place in the South Meeting Room of Newcomb Hall. On Friday, April 15, at 10 a.m. in the Visitors Lounge of Newcomb Hall, he will speak informally on "The Hermeneutic Field and the Non-Hermeneutic." On the following Friday, April 22, also at 10 a.m. in the Visitor's Lounge of Newcomb Hall he will discuss "The Future of Literary Studies" from both an intellectual and an institutional point of view. Born in West Germany in 1948, Gumbrecht has taught all over the world and is now the Guerard Professor of Literature at Stanford University. He previously taught at the University of Siegen, where he founded the first graduate school for literary studies in Germany. He is the author of over 250 publications, including a history of Spanish literature and monographs on Zola, the history of aesthetic experience, and medieval narrative.
