ALUMNI, EDUCATORS CONVERGE AT U.VA. TO CONSIDER TEACHING TOPICS CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., April 14 -- Educators and alumni of the University of Virginia's Curry School of Education will address the challenges of teaching during a series of seminars April 22-23. Education Day, an annual alumni event that brings about 200 graduates to U.Va., has been expanded this year into a colloquium addressing topics related to reading, diversity and school violence. The "Curry Colloquium 1994" seminars will begin on Friday at 10:15 a.m. in Ruffner Hall. The hour-long sessions are sponsored by the Curry School of Education Foundation and the Henderson Roundtable. Established in 1993 in memory of Edmund H. Henderson, who was director of U.Va.'s McGuffey Reading Center for two decades, the roundtable explores a topic related to reading success. This year's roundtable on the role of intelligence honors James E. Deese, a U.Va. professor emeritus widely recognized for his contributions to understanding how humans learn. During a keynote address Friday at 1 p.m., James M. Cooper, who is leaving his position as dean of the Curry school after a decade, will speak on the school's achievements during his leadership. He will also address the challenges facing the school and education in the coming decade. Experts in reading, writing and spelling instruction will lead seminars that start Saturday at 9:30 a.m. The seminars are part of the George Graham Lecture Series that honors Graham, a Curry school graduate who became an editor at Houghton-Mifflin publishing firm. ### April 13, 1994 UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA'S CURRY COLLOQUIUM 1994 Schedule of Events Friday, April 22, Education Day 9 - 10 a.m. Welcoming Remarks and Awards Ceremony Ruffner Hall Auditorium 10:15 - 11:15 a.m. Four concurrent seminars: Helping Children Cope with School Violence Dewey G.
