94-04-21 Outstanding Teachers From All Career Levels are Honored With University-wide Awards OUTSTANDING TEACHERS FROM ALL CAREER LEVELS ARE HONORED WITH UNIVERSITY-WIDE AWARDS CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., April 21 -- Fifteen University of Virginia faculty members and five graduate teaching assistants and fellows have been selected as winners of 1993-94 University-wide awards honoring dedicated and outstanding teaching. They were chosen from among dozens of nominations, many with in-depth testimonials, submitted by students and faculty colleagues, said Richard P. Warner, associate professor of drama and chair of the University's teaching-awards committee. "Choosing was extremely difficult because there are clearly so many committed teachers at all stages of their careers here," he said. The awards finalists' own statements of their teaching philosophies and aims have been so instructive and impressive in recent years that a selection will be available through the U.Va. Teaching Resource Center to anyone who would like to use them, Warner said. "All of the nominees have been models in different ways showing what good teaching is all about." The 1993-94 award-winners include: o Robert F. Bruner, professor of business administration, and Robert L. Vickery, professor of architecture: co-winners of the Alumni Association Distinguished Professor Award. The annual award is given to a faculty member who has excelled as a classroom teacher, shown unusual concern for students and made significant contributions to the life of the University over a period of at least a decade. The co-winners will each receive a $1,500 prize. o Tanya H. Furman, assistant professor of environmental sciences: the Alumni Board of Trustees Teaching Award. The award, given to an assistant professor of demonstrated talent and skill, carries a $2,500 stipend with $1,500 in additional support, and offers a semester research assignment. Winners of All-University Outstanding Teacher Awards, each carrying a $2,000 cash prize and recognizing excellence in teaching and the ability to inspire and motivate students, include: o Warren T. Byrd, associate professor of landscape architecture o Bascom S. Deaver Jr., professor of physics o Robert T. Denomme, professor of French o Jeffrey L. Hantman, associate professor of anthropology o Susan E. Perry, assistant professor of commerce Winners of the All-University Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Awards, each carrying a $1,000 prize and recognizing excellence in teaching and contributions to the teaching mission of the University, are: o Neil L. Arditi, English o Thomas J. Bensky, physics o Robert T. Burrus Jr., economics This year for the first time, two teaching awards were made to residents or fellows in health sciences. Winners receiving a $1,000 cash award are: o Reid B. Adams, M.D. o Carlos F. Gomez, M.D. Lilly Teaching Fellow Awards support six assistant professors each year in efforts to develop excellent undergraduate teaching skills. Working with specialists from inside and outside the University throughout the academic year and with a senior faculty mentor, they develop a new course in their field or substantially revise one. Winners of the fellowships for the coming academic year are: o Teresa B. Culver, assistant professor of civil engineering o Janet R. Horne, assistant professor of French o Kirk A. Martini, assistant professor of architecture o Timothy S. Prinz, assistant professor of government and foreign affairs o Kathryn M. Rohe, assistant professor of drama o Robert M. Sellers, assistant professor of psychology Earlier this year Paul M. Gaston, professor of history, was nominated by the awards committee and became one of 11 college and university faculty members statewide chosen as a winner of a State Council of Higher Education Outstanding Faculty Award. The annual award, funded by the General Assembly and honoring outstanding faculty members for their contributions to their students, their disciplines and the public, carries a $5,000 prize.
