U.VA. MAILS ACCEPTANCE LETTERS FOR 1999 CLASS CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., April 12 -- The University of VirginiaŐs Admissions Office has mailed acceptance letters to 4,863 high school seniors. Admissions officials had a slightly larger number of applicants than last yearŐs pool from which to choose the 1999 class. The University received a total of 15,551 applications -- approximately 550 more than last year. U.Va. extended early-decision admission offers last fall to 735 high school seniors, bringing the total number of admission offers to date to 5,598. The University hopes to enroll 2,779 first-year students. Of that number about 2,186 will enter the College of Arts and Sciences, 465 will enroll in the School of Engineering and Applied Science, 85 in the School of Architecture and 43 in the School of Nursing. Dean of Admissions John A. Blackburn expects the entering class to have similar characteristics as last yearŐs entering class. Approximately 65 percent will be Virginia residents and about 53 percent will be female students. Students who received the letters mailed March 31 have until May 1 to indicate if they will accept U.Va.Ős offer. Blackburn expects that the University can begin to extend admission offers by mid-May to some of the roughly 2,300 students placed on a waiting list. Blackburn anticipates an entering class slightly stronger academically than last yearŐs incoming students. ### April 11, 1995
