SOUTH ASIAN VIDEO COLLECTION ARRIVES AT CLEMONS LIBRARY CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., April 13 -- Scholars now have access to more than 2,000 video cassettes on South Asian culture and history recently acquired by the University of Virginia. The Center for South Asian Studies and Clemons Library collaborated to obtain the film collection, which consists of only original-release prints, rather than second- or third-hand prints commonly sold by vendors. ÒThese films are an excellent teaching resource for faculty and students,Ó associate anthropology professor H.L. Seneviratne said. He considers the value and depth of the collection to be unequaled except in film archives in India. The film selection includes linguistic and literary studies, drama, religion, sociology, anthropology, history, media studies, business and commerce. The collection also contains the complete set of the ÒRamayanaÓ and ÒMahabharataÓ serials produced for Indian television as well as several Pakistani television dramas. The majority of the films are Hindi/Urdu, but the collection also contains films in Panjabi, Gujarati, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu and Bengali. Seneviratne said faculty at other institutions may borrow the films. The film list can be accessed by typing Òt-indian video collectionÓ in the U.Va. VIRGO on-line catalogue.
