Sutphen, associate professor and head of gastroenterology at the University of Virginia Children's Medical Center, is chair of the American Board of Pediatrics Board of Pediatric Gastroenterology. As chair of the seven-member national group, Sutphen's responsibilities include reviewing candidates' applications to the board, and preparing questions to determine their suitability for appointment to the board. He was appointed by members of the board for a two-year period beginning January 1. Sutphen, an Ohio native, has been at U.Va. since 1981. He received his medical degree from Columbia Medical School In New York, completed his residency at Johns Hopkins and served in the Air Force as a pediatric gastroenterologist in Hawaii. ### April 3, 1996
