AMBASSADOR DAVID ABSHIRE WILL SPEAK AT U.VA. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., April 19 -- Former NATO ambassador David Abshire, founder and president of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, will speak at the University of Virginia on Friday, April 19, at 8 p.m. in Jefferson Hall. Abshire, whose lecture is sponsored by U.Va.'s Jefferson Literary and Debating Society, is co-author of the newly released book, "Putting America's Home in Order: The Nation as a Family," which examines the challenges facing American government. The book offers analysis of the problems in America's leadership and calls for a renewal of character, strategic direction and vision. Other subjects of discussion include tax law, the legislative process and the budgetary cycle. Abshire is a former U.S. Ambassador to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). During his years of government service, Abshire received the Distinguished Public Service Medal, the highest Defense Department's civilian award. The West Point graduate has also served as Assistant Secretary of State for Congressional Relations (1958-60) and as special counselor to the president (1987).
