BOARD OF VISITORS ESTABLISHES TWO ENDOWED PROFESSORSHIPS CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va., April 12 -- The University of Virginia's Board of Visitors established two new endowed professorships, including one in law and one in medicine, at its meeting here today. The action brings the total of endowed chairs at U.Va. to 377. In the School of Law the board established the Albert C. BeVier Research Professorship through a gift from Michael J. and professor Lillian R. BeVier in honor of Michael BeVier's father, who died in 1963. A native of Minneapolis, Albert BeVier was a mechanical engineer who during World War II served as director of test engineers for General Electric Co. At the time of his death he was vice president of marketing for Franklin Electric Co. in Indiana. Michael BeVier, a financial consultant, is co-founder and chairman of MorBanc, a mortgage banking firm. Lillian BeVier, a leading constitutional scholar and member of the law faculty since 1973, holds the Henry L. and Grace Doherty Charitable Foundation Professorship in Law and the Elizabeth D. & Richard A. Merrill Research Professorship in Law. Harrisonburg business leader Charles O. Strickler and his wife, Judy, contributed a $1 million gift to the School of Medicine to establish the Strickler Family Professorship in Transplant Surgery. The new professorship will support a nationally ranked transplant surgeon. Strickler, who received a kidney transplant at U.Va. in 1988, is president of Rocco Inc., one of the largest poultry producers in the United States. In 1988 he was honored as business person of the year by the Harrisonburg/Rockingham County Chamber of Commerce, and in 1995 he received the Distinguished Alumni Award from Virginia Tech.
